BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY
United Way of Greater Nashville works to break the cycle of multi-generational poverty
by addressing its root causes and strengthening 昀椀 nancial stability for vulnerable
households. With 44% of Tennessee families living below the ALICE threshold, 昀椀 nancial
barriers disproportionately burden working people. Our efforts help more families rise
above that threshold, giving them the stability to thrive and grow without the constant
threat of 昀椀 nancial collapse.
FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT THAT LEADS TO LASTING
STABILITY FOR GREATER NASHVILLE FAMILIES
Many Nashville residents face 昀椀 nancial challenges
that limit their stability and long-term security. High
debt, limited savings, low credit scores and dif昀椀 culty
navigating 昀椀 nancial systems make it hard to meet basic
needs, handle emergencies and plan for the future. With
nearly half of Nashville residents being below the ALICE
threshold, many residents face 昀椀 nancial challenges that
threaten their stability and long-term security.
In 2025, the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC)
advanced its mission to strengthen 昀椀 nancial stability and
economic mobility for individuals and families across
our community. Through innovative partnerships and
dedicated counseling services, the FEC supported 1,206
residents in increasing savings by $1.5 million, reducing
debt by $7.6 million, and helped 406 individuals improve
their scores by an average of 35 points, demonstrating
measurable results that transformed lives.
