BREAKING THE
CYCLE OF POVERTY
Greater Nashville is thriving, but many are being left behind. Housing prices and broader in昀氀 ation are
rising rapidly, and wages are not keeping up with growth. In 2022, the last year data was available, the
ALICE Household Survival Budget for a single adult in Tennessee was $26,856, nearly double the federal
poverty level of $13,590. For a family of four, the ALICE budget was $75,600.
More than 1.2 million households in Tennessee
are below the ALICE threshold. One-昀椀 fth of our
neighbors are living in poverty, and 30% of those
are children. This is how the cycle of poverty spins
– children born into poverty have limited resources
and access to opportunities, making it more dif昀椀 cult
to attain higher education and get a job that pays
livable wages.

United Way of Greater Nashville can help break
the cycle of poverty by addressing the roots of
multi-generational poverty and improving 昀椀 nancial
stability among vulnerable populations so that we
increase the number of individuals and families
achieving household self-suf昀椀 ciency. Our work gets
more families above the ALICE threshold, giving
them the platform to thrive and begin to grow
without the looming threat of 昀椀 nancial collapse.
