In 2024, Hands On Nashville and
United Way of Greater Nashville merged,
combining resources, programming,
support networks and 昀椀 nances to better
serve our vulnerable neighbors across
Middle Tennessee.
The Hands On team began the year in disaster response mode, hosting targeted cleanups after
tornadoes hit Middle Tennessee in December 2023. During recovery and cleanup efforts, Hands On was
in the midst of merging with United Way of Greater Nashville. But rather than stalling progress, disaster
work showed the importance of the merger and quickly got the two teams working together to engage
volunteers and support survivors, particularly in Madison and Clarksville.
The merger has built out the support capabilities
of both organizations. The Hands On development
team added corporate volunteer engagement
strategies to UWGN’s corporate and fundraising
strategies. And the UWGN Community Impact
team worked with Hands On’s Community Partner
Program to offer a broader range of supports to both
UWGN initiatives and partner programs.
With shared efforts and resources, the new
combined team was set up to engage volunteers
to do important work in the community throughout
the year. Volunteers tutored kids in math, helped
adults prepare for the GED and coached English
language learners across Greater Nashville. They
helped public library patrons use computers and
taught digital literacy, drove cancer patients to
treatment appointments, and cooked healthy meals
for them. They built trails, clear invasive species
and clean up trash in local parks. And they helped
nonpro昀椀 ts host numerous fundraising and cultural
events.

Hands On volunteers gave their time and talents to
help our community thrive in 2024. More than 11,000
volunteers signed up for 23,000 service activities
bene昀椀 ting our neighbors, schools and public spaces.
Together, they dedicated more than 66,000 hours of
service to the community.
This is the vital, everyday support Hands On can
bring to more Tennesseans thanks to the new
partnership with UWGN. With support, Hands
On also began the work of expanding its services
to other counties served by UWGN. ClarksvilleMontgomery County was the 昀椀 rst target area for
volunteer support, because of community needs
related to rapid population growth as well as
the ability to continue building on relationships
that developed during the tornado response and
recovery. There are plans to expand into all counties
in our footprint in 2025.
